Matthew Law BA(Hons), MSc, PhD

Professor Matthew Law graduated with a mathematics degree from Oxford University and a Master in Statistics from the University of Kent at Canterbury, before completing his Ph.D. in Biostatistics at UNSW Sydney. He is Head of the Biostatistics and Databases Program at the Kirby Institute, UNSW Sydney, and is a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) of Australia Principal Research Fellow.

He has broad research interests in clinical trials, cohort and linkage studies, and mathematical modeling applied across a number of infectious diseases including HIV, HCV, and sexually transmissible infections. He has helped establish adult and pediatric HIV cohort studies in Australia and South East Asia and is co-PI of IeDEA Asia-Pacific. A key focus of his work is using biostatistical and mathematical models to assess factors associated with long-term treatment outcomes or transmission prevention. He has a longstanding interest in chronic disease outcomes, such as cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and cancer in HIV-positive people, aiming to understand better the effects of HIV, aging, antiretroviral treatment, and lifestyle factors on disease risk.
