Matthew J. Griffee

Dr. Matthew Griffee is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology. He provides anesthesia and perioperative medical care for patients in the University Medical Center, the Huntsman Cancer Institute, and at the Salt Lake City VA. He teaches anesthesiology residents, medical students, and residents in the classroom, operating room, and intensive care unit.

In addition to working in the operating rooms, Dr. Griffee is an attending critical care physician in the surgical ICU at the university and at the VA medical center. Dr. Griffee provides comprehensive critical care services including assessment and treatment of organ failure, post-operative pain and cognitive dysfunction, and evidence-based risk reduction to avoid common complications of hospital care.

Dr. Griffee's has clinical research projects on the impact of emergency echocardiography for evaluation of hemodynamic instability in the operating room and ICU and on novel echo Doppler indices of pulmonary hypertension.

Dr. Griffee has experience in development of a multidisciplinary blood conservation protocol for cardiac surgery patients and the in the role of echocardiography in treatment of septic shock.

Dr. Griffee teaches anesthesia, surgery, and emergency medicine residents on ICU rotations. His ICU didactic topics include paradigms in post-operative care for open heart surgery patients, care for patients with ventricular assist devices, and evaluation and treatment of right heart failure. In addition, Dr. Griffee has a teaching interest in respiratory physiology and lung-protective mechanical ventilation.
