Matthew Alcusky PhD, PharmD, MS

Dr. Alcusky is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Epidemiology, Department of Population and Quantitative Health Sciences. As a pharmacoepidemiologist and health services researcher, he is focused on generating evidence from large observational data sources to inform clinical practice and guide health policy. Recently, his clinical research has included the study of prescribing patterns, comparative safety and effectiveness, and medication-related healthcare utilization, often in older high-risk populations for whom clinical trial evidence is sparse. Dr. Alcusky is also one of the lead investigators for the Independent Evaluation of the MassHealth 1115 Demonstration Extension, which will measure changes in quality of care, health outcomes, and costs associated with large-scale delivery system reforms in Massachusetts, including the implementation of Medicaid Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). He is also a member of the UMass team developing and refining risk-based predictive models to adjust Medicaid/CHIP global payments to managed care entities. As part of an international research team, he is also studying the effects of the implementation of a regional medical home initiative in Italy. Prior to joining UMass, Dr. Alcusky trained as a health economics and outcomes research fellow in academic and industry settings, and he retains an interest in pharmaceutical policy and value assessment.
