Dr. Matthew Cavender is an interventional cardiologist specializing in clinical trials and observational comparative effectiveness research to evaluate pharmacologic and catheter-based strategies for preventing cardiovascular events in high-risk patients, including those with advanced coronary artery disease, heart failure, diabetes, and obesity. He is clinically active and specializes in catheter-based therapies for patients with advanced coronary artery disease, peripheral vascular disease, and valvular heart disease.

Dr. Cavender has served as Principal Investigator on multiple industry and federally funded clinical research projects and has served as a Global Co-Investigator on six Coordinating Center trials, including the recently completed SOUL cardiovascular outcomes trial and ongoing REDEFINE-3 cardiovascular outcomes trial. Dr. Cavender has also served as a member of a number of clinical trial steering committees and other clinical trial administrative committees. He is the director of the Cardiovascular Clinical Trials unit that oversees site-based clinical research in the Division of Cardiology.

Outside of the University of North Carolina, he is active in the American College of Cardiology. He is on the Oversight Committee of the American College of Cardiology’s National Cardiovascular Data Registries, which includes 8 in-hospital and 2 outpatient clinical registries. He is the chair of both the American College of Cardiology’s working group on public reporting of clinical outcomes and the Metrics, Reporting, and Methodology Sub-Committee. Dr. Cavender also serves as an Associate Editor for Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions.
