Dr. Masanobu Kano, M.D, Ph.D. received an M.D. from Tokyo Medical and Dental University in 1982 and earned a Ph.D. at the University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Medicine in 1986. Masanobu became a research associate at Jichi Medical School (Tochigi, Japan). In 1990, Masanobu joined the Max-Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry (Goettingen, Germany), as a visiting researcher. Masanobu returned to Jichi in 1992 and started to examine synapse elimination in the developing cerebellum. Masanobu moved to the RIKEN Institute (Wako, Japan) in 1995, and then became a professor of physiology at Kanazawa University, School of Medicine in 1998. In Kanazawa, the Masanobu group discovered endocannabinoid-mediated retrograde suppression of synaptic transmission. In 2005, Masanobu moved to Osaka University, Graduate School of Medicine, and then moved back to the University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Medicine in 2007.
