Mary Kay Koenig, MD, is a professor in the Division of Child and Adolescent Neurology at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston. She serves as the Director of the Center for the Treatment of Pediatric Neurodegenerative Disease, Endowed Chair of Mitochondrial Medicine, and Associate Vice Chair for Clinical Research in the Department of Pediatrics.

Dr. Koenig is a board-certified child neurologist with specialized expertise in mitochondrial disorders, neurogenetic and neurometabolic diseases, and conditions such as tuberous sclerosis. Her clinical and research work focuses on advancing innovative therapies and improving outcomes for children with complex neurological disorders.

Since joining UTHealth in 2007, she has played a key role in expanding clinical research programs, leading numerous clinical trials, and helping to bring cutting-edge treatments to pediatric patients. Her leadership has significantly increased research activity and access to investigational therapies within the department. Dr. Koenig earned her medical degree from St. George’s University School of Medicine and completed her pediatrics residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch, followed by a fellowship in child neurology at UTHealth Houston.
