Dr. Mary Helen Hackney, MD, MS, FACP, is a board-certified Medical Oncologist and Medical Director of Community Oncology at the VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center and Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine. In this role, she oversees statewide oncology clinics and partnerships designed to expand access to high-quality cancer care, especially for patients in rural and underserved communities throughout Virginia.

Dr. Hackney also serves as a Professor in the Division of Hematology, Oncology, and Palliative Care within the Department of Internal Medicine at VCU School of Medicine. She is a member of the Developmental Therapeutics research program, focusing on cancer treatment, survivorship, and risk reduction—particularly in breast cancer care. Her responsibilities include evaluating quality improvement initiatives, co-chairing hospital cancer committees, and helping maintain institutional accreditations for cancer programs.

Before her current leadership role, Dr. Hackney directed Massey’s Rural Cancer Outreach Program, bringing oncology specialists and services directly to community hospitals that lacked local access to specialty care. She came to VCU for her internal medicine residency in 1988, completed a hematology/oncology fellowship, and joined the faculty in 1992. Dr. Hackney earned her medical degree from East Carolina University School of Medicine.

Dr. Hackney is widely recognized for her commitment to patient care, community education, mentorship, and oncology leadership. She has received numerous awards, including the VCU Women in Science, Dentistry & Medicine (WISDM) Professional Achievement Award, the Porter Master Clinician Award, and the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award. She has been repeatedly voted a Richmond Magazine “Top Doc.”
