Denise Dowd, MD, MPH is a pediatric emergency physician and director of research in the Division of Emergency and Urgent Care at the Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics. For over 30 years she has worked in the critical care hospital setting, starting as a registered nurse in Detroit. She has practiced in a children’s hospital setting for the past 20 years and has a national reputation as an expert in pediatric injury prevention.

Dr. Dowd has published over 100 articles and chapters in the fields of injury prevention and pediatric emergency medicine, is a popular national speaker on these topics and has provided expert US Congressional testimony on childhood traumatic injuries. She also fulfills a number of advocacy roles locally and nationally including leadership roles within the American Academy of Pediatrics and has served on several city-level public private partnerships and mayor’s advisories. Her current area of work is reducing the impact of trauma and building resilience in children affected by violence. Dr. Dowd has served on the Board of Directors for Charlie’s House since 2012.
