Martin Charns, DBA, is a Professor of Health Policy and Management and Director of the Program on Health Care Organization Studies at Boston University School of Public Health. He is also the Director of the Center for Healthcare Organization and Implementation Research, a Department of Veterans Affairs Health Services Research Center of Innovation. He has specialized in organizational factors, leadership, and change for numerous healthcare organizations and industrial firms, and is a frequent speaker at educational programs in the U.S. and abroad. Dr. Charns has held faculty positions at the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie-Mellon University, the Schools of Management and Public Health at Boston University, and the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions. For the past 35 years, he has been a member of the faculty of the Program for Chiefs of Clinical Services at the Harvard School of Public Health. He also regularly teaches as a core member of the faculty in the Harvard Advanced Program for Chiefs of Clinical Service and the Leadership Development Program for physician leaders.

Dr. Charns has co-authored three books, Health Care Organizations: A Model for Management (with Marguerite Schaefer), Collaborative Management in Health Care (with Laura Smith Tewksbury), and Collaboration in Health Care (with Cheryl Stetler). He also has published many articles and book chapters, and over sixty case studies on organizational design and change. His paper "Patterns of Coordination and Clinical Outcomes: A Study of Surgical Services" received the "best paper" award from the Healthcare Management Division of the Academy of Management, and his book Healthcare Organizations received the "one of the best management books" award from the American Hospital Association. Dr. Charns earned his doctorate in organizational behavior from Harvard Business School, where he also earned an MBA.
