Martin James has been a Consultant Hepatologist and Gastroenterologist at Nottingham University Hospitals’ (NUH) NHS Trust since September 2008. After 2 postgraduate years of training in South Africa, he completed UK clinical training, including an MRC Clinical Research Fellowship and Ph.D. in 2006. He then undertook 18 months of sub-specialty training in transplant hepatology & ERCP at Australian National Liver Transplantation Unit, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Sydney, during the time of the humbling 5-0 Ashes whitewash.

Since their appointment at NUH in September 2008, he has focused on the management of liver and biliary diseases with a range of expertise including hepatology, biliary endoscopy (EUS & ERCP), and emergency gastroenterology including acute GI bleeding. From 2009-to 15, he was the StR training lead for gastroenterology and endoscopy and continues to develop innovative endoscopy training workshops in the UK, Europe, and Myanmar with support from the BSG International Awards program. From November 2010-to 16, he was chair of the Mid Trent hepatic-pancreaticobiliary cancer multidisciplinary (HPB MDT) service and is currently Clinical Lead for Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Dr. James is an active clinical researcher and is one of the principal investigators in the National Institute of Health Biomedical Research Centre at Nottingham Digestive Diseases Centre (NIHR BRC), Nottingham. His research interests include the management and consequences of decompensated chronic liver disease, HPB endoscopy, and upper GI bleeding.
