Martin Strueber was trained as a cardiothoracic surgeon in Hannover and Kiel, Germany and became a staff surgeon at Hannover Medical School Cardiothoracic Programme. In 1998, he became the Surgical Director of their Heart and Lung Transplant Programme. Shortly thereafter, a VAD programme was started. In addition to these programmes, Dr. Strueber was also directing a translational research programme in lung transplantation and mechanical circulatory support.

In 2012, he took a position as the Surgical Director of Heart and Lung Transplant as well as the MCS programme at the University Heart Center in Leipzig, Germany, one of the largest heart centres in Europe. During the same time, he joined the Board of Directors of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. In January 2013, he was elected as President of the European Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. Beginning in October 2014 Dr Strueber began as the Endowed Director for Heart and Lung Transplant Surgery, Heart Failure Surgery and MCS within the Fred & Lena Meijer Heart and Vascular Institute, Richard DeVos Heart & Lung Transplant Programme in Grand Rapids, Michigan at Spectrum Health Hospital.
