Dr. Keels is from Morganton, North Carolina. She graduated from Duke University with a B.A. in Chemistry. After graduating from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Dentistry, she continued on to complete three years of specialty training in pediatric dentistry at UNC. During her residency, Dr. Keels received the Dentist-Scientist Award from the NIH which allowed her to complete a Ph.D. in epidemiology – with a focus on the etiology of craniofacial birth defects.

Dr. Keels is an associate professor in the Department of Surgery and Pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center. She remains affiliated with UNC as an Adjunct Associate Professor in Pediatric Dentistry. She maintains her board certification in pediatric dentistry. She is also a fellow in the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists. Dr. Keels also lectures nationally and abroad to pediatricians and dentists on pediatric dental topics.
