Dr. Medical Markus Hecht, formerly a senior physician in the radiation clinic at the University Hospital in Erlangen, is the new professor for radiation therapy and radiation oncology at Saarland University.
Markus Hecht studied medicine at the Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen-Nuremberg. During his studies, he received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation. He then began his specialist training in the radiation clinic at the University Hospital in Erlangen.
As part of his doctorate and habilitation, he investigated drugs with radiation-sensitizing potential that can influence the biological effects of radiation therapy. His clinical-translational work was awarded the Dissertation Prize of the German Society for Radiation Oncology and the Hermann Holthusen Prize. Most recently, Markus Hecht worked as a senior physician and head of the study center of the radiation clinic at the University Hospital Erlangen. His scientific focus lies in the implementation of clinical studies in radiation oncology and in particular in the combination of radiation therapy with immunotherapy. In such combination treatments, the immune-modulating effects of radiation therapy are specifically enhanced in order to improve the chances of recovery from oncological diseases.
At the Saarland University Hospital (UKS) in Homburg, he will be in charge of the Department of Radiation Therapy and Radiation Oncology. In addition to the continuous further development of radiotherapeutic care for patients with tumor diseases, he will also support novel radio-oncological treatment options within the framework of clinical therapy studies. Together with the specialist disciplines on site, he would like to advance the development into a top oncological center.
Markus Hecht started his service as a professor at Saarland University and as director of the Clinic for Radiation Therapy and Radiation Oncology at Saarland University Hospital on October 1, 2022.
