Markus Haapasalo DDS, PhD

Dr. Haapasalo received his dental degree from the University of Helsinki Faculty of Dentistry in Finland in 1978. He received his Ph.D. on the microbiology of endodontic infections from the University of Helsinki in 1986, and completed his certificate of endodontics in 1987. He taught and practiced endodontics in private practice and at the university.

From 1995 to 2004, he served as professor of endodontics and was later promoted to head of the department of endodontics and director of the postgraduate program in endodontics at the University of Oslo Faculty of Dentistry in Norway. In 2004, Dr. Haapasalo accepted the position of professor and head of the division of endodontics at the University of British Columbia Faculty of Dentistry in Canada. In 2006, he became the acting head of the department of oral biological and medical sciences at the unversity.

Dr. Haapasalo is active in various dental organizations. He is a member of the Canadian Dental Association and Royal College of Dentists of Canada, and an Associate member of AAE. He has authored or co-authored over 90 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is the editor-in-chief of the scientific international journal Endodontic Topics, an associate editor of the Journal of Endodontics, and serves on the Editorial Board of the International Endodontic Journal. He is also a reviewer for several other scientific journals and has contributed to several endodontic textbooks. He is the editor of the multimedia program Visual Endodontics Curriculum. In clinical endodontics, his special interests include instrumentation, irrigation, persistent infections, resorptions and root canal morphology.

He has received several teaching awards including the French Endodontic Society's Louis I. Grossman International Award in 2007. He actively lectures about endodontics worldwide.
