Mark is a Principal Investigator within the Cork Cancer Research Centre in UCC where his research team investigates cancer therapies using microbes. With a PhD in microbiology and an MBA from UCC, his interests include the development of tumour-specific drug delivery technology utilising bacteria or viruses. He has worked for a number of years at various international institutions (Los Angeles, Boston, Copenhagen) and has published extensively in the field of cancer therapy and microbiology.

Mark is a member of the executive council of the International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy of Cancer (ISCGT), a scientific committee member of the European Society for Gene & Cell Therapy (ESGCT), a council member of the Irish Association for Cancer Research (IACR), Vice-President of the Irish Society for Gene and Cell Therapy (ISGCT) and a member of the editorial board of several international journals (Human Gene Therapy, Current Gene Therapy, Bioengineered Bugs, Biomarkers in Cancer). His group’s work is funded by grants awarded from the Health Research Board, Cancer Research Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland, Enterprise Ireland and EU FP7.
