Mark Gurnell originally studied medicine at St Bartholomew's Hospital, London, and it was here that he first developed his interest in endocrinology under the combined tutelage of Mike Besser, John Wass and Ashley Grossman. In 1996, he moved to Cambridge, to the laboratory of Krish Chatterjee as a Wellcome Clinical Fellow, and undertook a PhD investigating the roles of the human thyroid hormone β receptor and the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ in human endocrine and metabolic disorders. He was recipient of the Medical Research Society’s Gold Medal and the Society for Endocrinology's Young Clinical Endocrinologist Prize.
