Mark Gudgeon was appointed as a consultant surgeon to the Derbyshire royal infirmary in 1995 and was subsequently appointed to Frimley park hospital in 1998. As a senior registrar I developed a special interest in colorectal surgery. I was one of the early developers of laparoscopic colorectal surgery and have been a trainer on the national programme since its inception. More recently I have developed a major interest in robotic surgery.
Whilst I trained as a general surgeon working in all areas of the speciality I have focused particularly on laparoscopic surgery and my main research interest is the improvement of rectal cancer surgery. I am an accredited colonoscopist for the national bowel cancer screening programme. Improving the treatment of rectal cancer and training the next generation of surgeons has been my main focus.
