Dr. Cohen is a Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiologist and holds a Ph.D. in Biomathematical Sciences. He received his medical degree from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Ph.D. from The City University of New York.
He then completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Texas Southwestern, Parkland Hospital, and his cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology fellowships at Washington University, Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. Dr. Cohen is Board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology, and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology.
Dr. Cohen’s path to his current position comes from a fundamental commitment to the improvement in the Quality of medical care. Dr. Cohen moved to Atlanta in 1991 after completing fellowship and entered practice in clinical cardiac electrophysiology. He became progressively involved in hospital medical staff leadership, including clinical quality, safety, and physician peer review. Dr. Cohen came to Piedmont in 2007 with the formation of The Piedmont Heart Institute, and moved his efforts from clinical practice to become the Chief of Quality, Informatics-IT, and Research for The Heart Institute. This role involved the implementation of an electronic medical record for PHI and then the leverage of this EMR for quality initiatives, particularly those required by Medicare. He also worked with Piedmont Hospital on cardiac quality initiatives. In early 2012, Dr. Cohen moved to his current position.
As the Vice President of Medical Affairs and the Chief Quality Officer for Piedmont Hospital, Dr. Cohen is responsible for the coordination of medical affairs to meet the needs of our patients, our physicians, and integrating these with the needs of the Hospital. He is the accountable lead executive in the areas of clinical quality, patient safety, hospital infection control, and hospital regulatory and emergency preparedness. He oversees medical staff governance, credentialing/privileging, and continuing medical education. Dr. Cohen works closely with Information Services to assure that the installed systems and technology meet the needs of the medical staff, and that the medical staff are trained to use the clinical systems. As a member of the Piedmont Hospital executive leadership team, the Dr. Cohen is responsible for providing input, guidance, and action to meet the strategic, financial, operational, developmental, organizational and public relations needs of Piedmont Hospital and Piedmont Healthcare.
Dr. Cohen is from Denver, Colorado, and attended college at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, with a major in Applied Mathematics in Biology. He maintains an outpatient practice in cardiac arrhythmia management, as well as working with the Piedmont Hospital inpatient services in cardiology and cardiac electrophysiology.
