Mark C. Bicket, MD, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Health Management & Policy at the University of Michigan, where he directs pain and opioid research. He co-directs the Overdose Prevention Engagement Network (OPEN), an initiative to prevent, treat, and reduce harms from substance use through community partnerships and stigma reduction. His research integrates clinical trials, health policy analyses, and pharmacoepidemiology.

Dr. Bicket has pioneered evidence-based approaches to reduce opioid-related harms and advanced the treatment of pain. He leads two NIH R01s to improve care for persons with opioid use disorder who have surgery and leads two pragmatic clinical trials funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, including CARES for Kids, which compares commonly prescribed treatments for postoperative pain among adolescents and young adults.

Previously, he directed the nationally recognized pain medicine fellowship program and quality and safety for pain at Johns Hopkins, where he led the creation of their first system-wide pain management policy. Dr. Bicket votes as a member of the FDA committee on analgesics and has advised CMS, state governments, and national organizations on pain and opioid issues. His research, which includes 130 peer-reviewed articles, has appeared in JAMA, NEJM, and BMJ and has support from the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER), SAMHSA, and CDC. Dr. Bicket’s leadership has led to national recognition, including the 2024 Presidential Scholar Award from the American Society of Regional Anesthesia, the White House Fellowship, and election as a Fellow of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
