Mark Berg MS, PhD

Mark Berg is an Associate Professor of Sociology and Criminology at the University of Iowa. His primary research and teaching interests include criminology, social psychology, and the social determinants of health across the life course. His recent published research examines interpersonal disputes, the developmental pathways of antisocial behavior, and the life-course determinants of health outcomes. Throughout this research, he has considered the situational, social-ecological, and life-course contexts of social behavior, physical health, and well-being.  

Mark's work often relies on multilevel and longitudinal quantitative survey data using both original and secondary sources. Professor Berg’s work on the social determinants of aging and cardiovascular disease is funded by the Centers for Disease Control. His current collaborative research on the geographic scope of opioid mortality trends is funded by the United States Department of Agriculture.  He recently received funding from the National Science Foundation to assess community resilience and vulnerability to the COVID-19 pandemic. Professor Berg serves as the Director of the Crime and Justice Policy Research Program at the University of Iowa Public Policy Center.  He also serves on the Executive Committee of the Injury Prevention Research Center in the College of Public Health at the University of Iowa.
