Dr. Marjolein Kriek has studied both biomedical sciences and medicine in Leiden and has completed both studies. Subsequently, she carried out a study in an AGIKO process into the application of new diagnostic DNA techniques in patients with birth defects and a mental disability. This has resulted in the dissertation: “The human genome; you gain some, you lose some ”, on which she obtained her PhD in Leiden on 6 December 2007. The clinical geneticist training, which has now begun, was completed on 31 December 2010 and Dr Kriek was entered in the register of medical specialists. She currently holds a joint appointment between the Clinical and Human Genetics Departments, in order to fulfill a bridging function as a clinical geneticist between the clinicians and the laboratory with the introduction of the new high throughput sequencing techniques. Marjolein Kriek was the first woman in the world whose entire hereditary code was read as a whole. This has resulted in many national and international presentations and many educational activities at secondary schools, presentations for the general public, in education for medical students, and in-service training of medical specialists.
