Marios Papadopoulos BA, MD, BM BCh, FRCS

Dr. Marios Papadopoulos is a Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of London (St. George’s). He was educated at the Universities of Cambridge and Oxford and completed his neurosurgery training in London and San Francisco. His clinical interests are complex spinal surgery and vascular neurosurgery. His research interests are aquaporin water channels and their roles in the CNS (Nature Reviews Neuroscience 2013;14:265-77). He has also developed a novel technique to monitor intraspinal pressure and spinal cord perfusion pressure in patients with severe spinal cord injury in the neurointensive care unit (Critical Care Medicine 2014;42:646-55). This is analogous to monitoring intracranial pressure and cerebral perfusion pressure in patients with severe brain injury. He has shown that, after spinal cord injury, the swollen cord becomes compressed against the surrounding dura. Therefore, in addition to open reduction and laminectomy, expansion duroplastyis essential for effectively decompressing the injured spinal cord.
