Mario Mietzsch PhD

Mario Mietzsch is a biomedical scientist and structural biologist serving as a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Florida College of Medicine. His research lies at the intersection of structural biology, virology, and gene therapy, with a particular focus on the structure and function of parvoviruses and adeno-associated viruses (AAVs)—important vectors used in modern gene therapy. He has contributed to numerous studies investigating viral capsid structure, antigenicity, and mechanisms of infection using advanced techniques such as cryo-electron microscopy.

Mietzsch’s work has helped improve understanding of how viral vectors can be engineered for safer and more effective therapeutic delivery, including overcoming immune responses and enhancing targeting efficiency. He has co-authored a substantial body of peer-reviewed publications in virology and molecular biology and has played key roles in conceptualization, supervision, and visualization in collaborative research projects.
