Dr. Marilyn Bui is a Senior Member in the Department of Pathology and the Department of Machine Learning at Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute. She serves as the Scientific Director of the Analytic Microscopy Core and the Chair of the Women in Oncology Executive Board of the cancer center, and the Section Head of Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology of the pathology department. She is also a professor and served as the Director of the Cytopathology Fellowship at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine for 14 years until 2023.

Dr. Bui’s areas of expertise include bone and soft tissue pathology, cytopathology, biomarker testing, digital pathology, and augmented intelligence (AI). As a patient-centered pathologist integrating research, education, advocacy, and service, she is dedicated to providing the highest standard of patient care. She was honored with the   2019 College of American Pathologists (CAP) Distinguished Patient Care Award.

As a key opinion leader, Dr. Bui serves as the study pathologist for multiple research grants and has an extensive publication record, including over 230 peer-reviewed articles, 30 book chapters, and three books: The Atlas of Bone and Soft Tissue Pathology, The Healing Art of Pathology, and the Modern Techniques in Cytopathology. A prolific innovator, she holds three patents in digital pathology and cancer diagnostics. She serves on multiple scientific advisory boards for industry.

An award-winning educator and mentor, Dr. Bui has mentored 24 cytopathology fellows during her tenure as fellowship program director, as well as numerous college students, medical students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty. She has delivered more than 220 lectures both nationally and internationally, including keynote presentations. Additionally, she actively contributes to the field by serving on organizing committees for prestigious national and international meetings, including those of the Digital Pathology Association (DPA), the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology (USCAP), the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC), and the Florida Society of Pathologists (FSP).

Dr. Bui has had held numerous leadership roles, including serving as President of DPA (2019), President of the Medical Staff of Moffitt Cancer Center (2018-2020), President of the Chinese American Pathologists Association (2021-2022), President of FSP (2023-2025), the Chair of the Publications Committee and the Editorial Board of CAP Today (2018-2021), Chair of the expert panel of HER2 quantitative image analysis of breast cancer guidelines of CAP (2016-2019). Currently, she serves as the Chair of the Digital and Computational Pathology committee, Vice Speaker of the House of Delegates, and ex officio member of the Board of Governors for the CAP. Dr. Bui was born and raised in Beijing, China. After earning her medical degree there, she pursued a PhD in Immunology and Molecular Pathology at the University of Florida (UF). She completed her residency in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at UF, followed by a Cytopathology fellowship there. Since joining the Moffitt Cancer Center & Research Institute in 2005, she has advanced through the ranks, achieving the position of Senior Member in 2015.
