Marie F. Steinmetz MD

Dr. Marie Steinmetz is a board-certified physician in family medicine and integrative medicine. Ahead of her time in 1996, Dr. Steinmetz began studying other therapies such as acupuncture through the Helms Institute, the leading educator of acupuncture to physicians in the United States. Later that same year, she went on to study botanical medicine at Columbia University. Dr. Steinmetz began studying functional medicine with Jeff Bland in the late 1990s and went on for the full certification in Functional Medicine in 2014. In January 2014, she graduated from the leading Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona under Dr. Andrew Weil, the founder of Integrative Medicine. She is board certified in Integrative Medicine by the American Board of Physician Specialties.

Over her career, Dr. Steinmetz has served on the acupuncture board for the Virginia State Board of Medicine, Chairman of the family medicine department at Alexandria Hospital, member of the pharmacy committee at Alexandria Hospital, President of the Virginia Chapter of the Society of Medical Acupuncture, President of the Northern Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Family Medicine and member of the executive committee of Medical Society of Northern Virginia. She has been named Top Doc by Washingtonian Magazine, and Washington Consumers Checkbook and has been featured in the health section of the Washington Post. Dr. Steinmetz built one of the rare large, successful, and profitable Integrative and Functional Medicine Centers in the country. The center’s clinicians provided integrative primary care, acupuncture, functional medicine, and osteopathic manipulation. Other providers in the office included a Qi Gong teacher, a nutritionist, a yoga instructor, and a weight lifting instructor. The center hosted classes for the public on various therapies and subjects including the integrative medicine approach to heart disease, women’s health, and osteoporosis. Additionally, Dr. Steinmetz contributed a monthly article to Alexandria Times, a local newspaper on Integrative health for five years. She was named top doc by Washingtonian Magazine and Washington Consumer Reports.

The Steinmetz Center became part of the Inova Health System, and Dr. Steinmetz became their first Medical Director for Integrative and Functional Medicine. During her tenure at Inova, she worked on numerous projects at the system level including a demonstration kitchen, perioperative committee, cancer center, natural pharmacy, and the wellness committee which explored synergy and planned coordination between diverse departments within Inova. She organized and was moderator and speaker at the sold-out highly successful Inova Integrative and Functional Medicine Symposium. She is currently providing practice management consulting services for integrative medicine and advising on special projects with leaders in the field of integrative medicine. In January 2019, she will bring her clinical expertise to a federally qualified health center in the Washington, D.C. area.
