Marie-Béatrice Saade completed her medical studies in Limoges, France, then pursued her pediatric training in Rennes, where she was certified as a pediatrician in 2012. She was a pediatric fellow at Rennes Pediatric University Hospital in France from 2013 to 2015. Her enthusiasm for diabetes research was evident early in her training. Dr. Saade completed a Master 2 degree from Paris Diderot University (Nutrition Metabolism and Signaling). She participated in a basic science research project in INRA Rennes with the group of Dr Blat and Dr Neunlist evaluating the impact of obesity on the pancreatic intrinsic nervous system and its effects on insulin secretion in the context of a European multi-center project. Dr Saade pursued her research training in a clinical study examining the influence of nocturnal glycemia on ventricular repolarization and heart rate variability in children with type 1 diabetes, under the supervision of Dr Marc de Kerdanet and Pr Patrick Pladys (CHU de Rennes, INSERM LTSI 1099).
From 2015 to 2017, she pursued a clinical fellowship in pediatric endocrinology and diabetes at CHU Sainte Justine in Montreal, Canada. During the second year of her fellowship, she studied the influence of obesity and adiposity indices on cardiac autonomic function in a population of children from the QUALITY cohort under the supervision of Dr Henderson (CHU Sainte Justine) and Dr Poirier (University Institute of Quebec). In November 2017, after her clinical fellowhip, Dr Saade pursued a research fellowship under the supervision of Dr Henderson and Dr Rabasa-Lhoret (IRCM Montreal) with the generous support of the JDRF-ISPAD Research Fellowship. Dr Saade worked on an innovative randomized clinical trial to compare the efficacy of two strategies of carbohydrate intake (similar carbohydrate content but different timing) to reduce exercise-induced hypoglycemia in adolescents with type 1 diabetes. This study is integrated into the ongoing larger research program led by Dr Rabasa-Lhoret, which addresses the same issues in adults. This project aims to identify the optimal management of hypoglycemic risk during physical activity in patients with type 1 diabetes, in order to favor participation in physical activity by individuals with this disease.
