Mariangela Spitali is currently working as a senior director and head at UCB. After completing her Post-Doctorate in 1993, funded by the Medical Research Council and AIDS-Directed Programme, Mariangela Spitali commenced her industrial career at Celltech Therapeutics in Cell Adhesion Research, having responsibility for the purification and analysis of various immunoglobulins, recombinant Fc fusion proteins, and antigens. Mari was subsequently recruited to the Protein Biochemistry Department to increase her area of expertise in Process Sciences and was given the opportunity of designing a novel downstream process platform for the manufacture of antibody fragments from E.coli. As an Associate Director at UCB Celltech, Mari now leads a team of graduate and post-doctoral scientists within the area of Downstream Process Sciences. Key responsibilities include the design, implementation, and characterization of manufacturing processes for the production of various antibody-based therapeutic formats, from microbial and mammalian expression systems, and technology transfer for scale-up manufacture to produce drug substances from pivotal toxicology to early and late clinical studies, and in supporting activities for product launch.
