Maria Perales Santaella Doctor in Physical Activity and Sports Sciences (2014); Extraordinary Doctorate Award (2015) from the Polytechnic University of Madrid; First National Prize for Research in Sports Medicine by the Professional School of Physical Education and Sports Medicine of the University of Oviedo (2015); Second National Research Award in Sports Medicine by the Professional School of Physical Education and Sports Medicine of the University of Oviedo (2019).
Maria began his teaching and research career at the Faculty of CC. Of Physical Activity and Sports (Polytechnic University of Madrid) in 2010 in the area of improving health through physical exercise in pregnant women. She has been a researcher at the Hospital 12 de Octubre Research Institute (I + 12) since 2014. She has completed three stays in research centers abroad: Imperial College of London (United Kingdom) (2014); Western University (Canada) (2012); Universidad De Flores (Argentina) (2011) on maternal and fetal cardiovascular adaptations associated with physical exercise during pregnancy.
Maria has participated as a guest in various courses on the prescription of physical exercise for health, and associated benefits during pregnancy at a national and international level; and as a guest speaker at renowned international conferences such as the European College of Sport Science (2015); Proceedings of the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology Annual General Meeting (2015); Endocrinology Congress (2015); American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) (2017).
Maria's main lines of work have been focused on understanding maternal cardiovascular adaptations to physical exercise, the fetal cardiovascular response to moderate exercise, the effectiveness of physical exercise programs in preventing prenatal depression and improving pregnancy outcomes, and optimizing training load during pregnancy. Currently, she continues to develop new research studies to understand the physiological mechanisms associated with physical exercise during the gestational period.
