Maria Asuncion Mejias received her medical and PhD degrees summa cum laude from Universidad de Málaga, Spain, and completed her fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and a Master in Clinical Science at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in the United States. In 2009 she joined the Division of Infectious Diseases at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, where she is Principal Investigator for the Center for Vaccines and Immunity. She is also an Associate Professor of Pediatrics with tenure at The Ohio State University College of Medicine.
Dr. Mejias's research focuses on airway and respiratory viral diseases, and she has been recognized with several awards for her research, specifically those about respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection. More recently she was recognized by the European Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases in 2010, and awarded twice in 2014 for her work in the field of RSV. In 2015, she received the Caroline B. Hall Clinically Innovative Research Award awarded by the Pediatric Infectious Diseases Society and the Outstanding Team Award at her local institution.
Dr. Mejias is a member of several professional organizations, including the Society for Pediatric Research, the American Society for Microbiology, the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society, and the European Society for Pediatric Infectious Diseases. In addition, she serves as an external reviewer for different organizations as well as a reviewer for multiple peer-reviewed medical journals. She has contributed with more than 170 publications including original articles, reviews, editorials, and book chapters.
