Professor Maria Luisa Brandi took the MD Degree in 1977, the Board of Endocrinology in 1980, and the Ph.D. Degree in Cell Biology in 1987. From 1984 to 1989 she spent about 5 years at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, USA under the superb mentorship of Gerald D. Aurbach. She was a Full Professor of Endocrinology at the University of Florence in Italy until 2020. She is a Professor of Endocrinology at the Vita-Salute University at the San Raffaele, Milan, Italy, and an International Visiting Professor at McMaster University in Toronto, Canada. She is President of FIRMO Foundation a nonprofit research organization fully devoted to skeletal health. She is the President of the National Observatory on Fragility Fractures and Scientific Director of the Stabilimento Chimico Farmaceutico Militare in Florence, Italy.

She is active both in clinical and basic research for bone and mineral disorders. Her basic background is in cellular and molecular endocrinology applied to clinical medicine. She is well recognized worldwide for the novel cellular models used in endocrine research and of these 7 were patented. Treasuring her clinical experience she promoted the preparation of clinical guidelines in the area of bone and mineral metabolism, today used by clinicians worldwide. She published over 800 papers in peer-reviewed journals and 250 chapters in books. Since 2020 she is Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal on Fragility Fractures. She serves as a member of the Board and Scientific Committee of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and she is General Secretary of the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO). She can certainly be recognized as a Bone Doctor and a Medical Scientist.
