Maria Paz Deza Leon obtained her medical degree from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia Lima, Peru. She then went on to do a postdoctoral fellowship at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland. She completed her pediatric residency at Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, where she stayed for an additional year as chief resident, before completing her Pediatric Infectious Diseases Fellowship at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center. She, along with her husband and 2 boys, has made Kansas City their home, where she joined as an infectious diseases faculty at Children’s Mercy Hospital in July 2024. Her research interests include epidemiology of respiratory viruses and pandemic preparedness.
