Dr Nagai received her bachelor's degree in Biology at University of São Paulo (1980) and PhD in Biochemistry at University of São Paulo (1987). In 1984 she became an Assistant Professor at the Clinical Department of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo. She was a Visiting Researcher at the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Montreal (1990) and a Visiting Professor at the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at Queen's University (1996). 

Dr Nagai received a Marie Curie bursary and went on to Post-Doctoral training at CRC Cancer Genetics Group at Cambridge University, Department of Pathology, Cambridge,UK (1993) working on chromosome 17q deletion mapping in breast cancer and collaborating with the identification of RET oncogene mutations in MEN2B. She is currently an Associate Professor at Discipline of Oncology, Department of Radiology and Oncology, Medical School, University of São Paulo.
