Professor Margaret Johnson is one of the UK’s leading consultants in HIV medicine, practicing at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust and the Hospital of St John & St Elizabeth. She has been working as a consultant in HIV/AIDS, Thoracic (Respiratory) Medicine and General Medicine for over 20 years, has been the Clinical Director of HIV/AIDS services at the Royal free since 1993 and previously held the position of Medical Director at the Royal Free. Her special interests include antiretroviral antibody testing, clinical trials of antiretroviral agents and HIV infection in women.

In 2005 she was made Professor in HIV Medicine by University College of London. She was the Chairman of British HIV Association from 2004 – 2008. Since her appointment at the Royal Free, she has set up the first and largest open-access HIV testing clinic in the UK and has started the first specific clinic for women with HIV infection. Professor Johnson has been the principle investigator in excess of 100 HIV studies and is principle investigator on 25 ongoing antiretroviral studies on behalf of pharmaceutical companies, the Medical Research Council and for in-house academic studies.
