Marek Smieja MD, PhD, FRCPC

Dr. Marek Smieja is a Microbiologist and Infectious Diseases Physician and is Interim Chief of the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program, Hamilton Health Sciences. His primary research interests are in the diagnosis of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, and in the role of chronic infections in respiratory and cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Marek Smieja is involved in the development and evaluation of respiratory diagnostic tests for SARS-coronavirus, influenza, and rhinovirus. His lab develops tests for respiratory and gastrointestinal infections in both Canada and Botswana. Further, Dr. Smieja’s HIV studies have examined the interaction between HIV infection and cardiovascular disease, with current studies focusing on smoking cessation, inflammation, and dental health. His clinical focus encompasses infectious disease and HIV care.
