In 1997, he started his residency at the Kliniken Maria-Hilf, Department of Anesthesiology, Monchengladbach, Germany. In 2001 he moved to the RWTH-Aachen University Hospital where he finalized his residency. Directly hereafter he went for the ICU fellowship at the same institution that he finalized in 2003. Particularly the use of laboratory assays (ROTEM and thrombin-generation) for optimization of patient treatment algorithms covered his Ph.D. thesis which he defended in 2013. Next, to several new diagnostic tests (e.g. whole blood thrombin generation test, platelet function tests), his group developed a mock circulation model in which he investigated coagulation patterns during extracorporeal circulation. In January 2017 Dr. Lance moved to Hamad Medical Corporation, Doha, Qatar, where he became head of research and vice-chair of the Department of anesthesiology and perioperative medicine. Next to this Dr. Lancé became an associate Professor at Well-Cornell Medical College, Qatar.
