Dr. Marco Alejandro Gonzalez was born and raised in Miami, graduating first at Bethlehem Jesuit High School. He studied at Duke University where he was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and graduated Magna Cum Laude with an AB in Economics and minor degrees in Spanish Literature and Chemistry. He later attended the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine, graduating with honors as a Doctor with Distinction. Dr. Gonzalez made his internship at Jackson Memorial Hospital where he was awarded as Intern of the Year. He completed his ophthalmological residency, as well as his two-year postdoctoral clinical specialization in retinal vitreous surgery at the Bascom Palmer Ophthalmological Institute in Miami.
Dr. Gonzalez has published numerous articles and chapters in peer-reviewed medical journals related to diseases and retinal vitreous surgery and has presented his work at international conferences. His research interests include macular degeneration related to age , diabetic retinopathy , retinal vascular diseases, retinal detachment repair , diabetic vitrectomy, epiretinal membrane surgery , and macular hole repair. Dr. Gonzalez is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and the American Society of Retinal Specialists. He speaks fluent Spanish and is an avid fan of Miami sport and a golf enthusiast.
