Dr. Marcio da Fonseca has been appointed as Associate Professor, Head of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, and Director of Oral Health for Special Needs Children, in the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry. Dr. da Fonseca earned his dental degree at the Federal University of Juiz de Fora, Brazil, in 1987. He went on to the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, for his Master of Science degree and Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry, followed by a fellowship at the Denver Children’s Hospital. In 1994-95, he completed an Oral Medicine fellowship at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, working exclusively with hematopoietic stem cell transplant children. He was a Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of Predoctoral Pediatric Dentistry at the University of California, San Francisco (1995-97). At the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (1997 to 2005), he was Director of the Pediatric Dental Service at the University Medical Center. He was Director of Inpatient Dental Care at Nationwide Children’s Hospital and Clinical Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at the Ohio State University College of Dentistry (2005-2010). In 2005, he participated in the first class of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s Leadership Institute at the Kellogg School of Management (Northwestern University). He most recently was Law-Lewis Professor and Director of the Pediatric Dental Graduate Program at the University of Washington Center for Pediatric Dentistry and Seattle Children’s Hospital. Dr. da Fonseca is a Diplomate of the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry, and is an active practitioner of pediatric dentistry.

Dr. da Fonseca is the author of 39 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. He has authored eight book chapters and is the co-editor of a textbook. As a respected pediatric dentistry clinician-scholar, he has presented 55 invited papers at scientific conferences, symposia, and seminars. Dr. da Fonseca’s clinical research interests include the oral health of bone marrow transplant and other medically compromised pediatric and adolescent patients, the oral health of cleft lip and palate patients, and the effects of poverty on the behavior of children in the dental treatment environment. Dr. da Fonseca is the Editor of the Journal of Dentistry for Children, and the Associate Editor of Pediatric Dentistry (both official publications of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry). He reviews manuscripts for the International Journal of Pediatric Dentistry and the Journal of Dental Education. Dr. da Fonseca is a member of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and the American Dental Education Association.
