Marc Galanter, MD, FASAM is a Professor of Psychiatry at NYU and Founding Director of NYU’s Division of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. He established the NYU Addiction Fellowship Training Program and the Bellevue Hospital Substance Abuse Division. He attended Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he did his residency in Psychiatry and then served as a Clinical Associate at the National Institute of Mental Health.

At ASAM, he served on the Board of Directors from 1985 to 2013, as its President from 1999 to 2001, and most recently as Region 1 Area Director. He received ASAM’s Brinkley Smithers Award for Research (2009) and the Annual ASAM Award for Expanding the Frontiers of Addiction Medicine (2011). He currently chairs the ASAM Action Group on Twelve-Step Recovery and is the Project Director of ASAM’s Conference Grant from the National Institute of Drug Abuse.
