Manoj Kumar Barthwal PhD

Dr. Manoj Kumar Barthwal is a senior scientist at the Division of Pharmacology, CDRI, Lucknow, India. He did his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Lucknow University in 2001. He has over fifteen years of rich experience in the area of cellular signaling and cardiovascular pharmacology. He has worked for more than six years in the area of cardiovascular research at the Experimental Atherosclerosis Section, National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, NIH, Bethesda, and the Division of Molecular Cardiology, Cardiovascular Research Institute, Texas A&M-Health Science Center, Texas. Presently Dr. Barthwal’s group is involved in understanding the molecular mechanism of cardiometabolic disorders like atherosclerosis and the role of inflammation, innate immunity, and hyperlipidemia in the same.

Dr. Barthwal’s laboratory is investigating the role of macrophages and vascular smooth muscle cells in the progression of cardiometabolic disorders like atherosclerosis. Protein Kinase mediated signaling and phosphorylation events are of special interest. The final aim is to contribute to the identification and development of therapeutic targets for atherosclerosis treatment. At the same time research group is also involved in the development of in vivo and in vitro models of atherothrombosis for understanding the disease mechanism and screening CDRI lead molecules for their anti-atherothrombotic effect. Novel anti-atherothrombotic molecules have been characterized in animal models of atherosclerosis developed by Dr. Barthwal’s group.
