Dr. Mel Cusi graduated from the University of Barcelona (Spain) in 1972. He completed his residency in Spain and in Sydney at the Prince of Wales Hospital. After nine years in general practice Dr Cusi completed a Certificate of Sports Medicine (RACGP) in 1992, and has been in full time sports medicine practice since 1993. He gained Fellowship of the Australian College of Sports Physicians in 1996.

He was the Honorary Medical Officer to the Beecroft Junior Rugby Club and to the Western Sydney Junior Rugby Union from 1994 to 1998. In 1997 he was appointed Medical Officer to the Australian under 19 Rugby Union Team. In 1998 he became Medical Officer to the West Harbour Rugby Club. He has been a Medical Provider to the Olympic Athlete Program since 1999, and Medical Coordinator of the New South Wales Institute of Sport Equestrian Team.

Dr. Cusi was appointed Visiting Fellow to the Sports Medicine Unit at the University of New South Wales in 1997 and is currently a Conjoint Lecturer. He is a Visiting Clinical Lecturer at the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (Barcelona, Spain). He is actively involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

He has been actively involved in the affairs of the Australasian College of Sports Physicians and was Honorary Secretary for seven years. He is currently the Honorary Treasurer. Dr. Cusi has a range of clinical interests, including back pain and pelvic instability in sport, the ethical aspects of drugs in sport, and lectures internationally in these areas. He is currently involved in a PhD programme at the Sydney School of Medicine, University of Notre Dame on the treatment of sacro-iliac joint pathology.Dr Cusi is a keen golfer and follows most sports.
