Dr. Mandar Aras is a cardiologist who specializes in advanced heart disease and heart failure. He cares for patients who have undergone heart transplants and those with left ventricular assist devices, which are implanted mechanical pumps used in end-stage heart failure to help circulate blood from the heart to the rest of the body. In addition, he has a particular interest in treating patients with heart failure induced by chemotherapy.
Aras also treats patients with pulmonary hypertension and right-sided heart failure, a condition that causes blood to back up in the veins and results in swelling of the abdomen and legs. The goal of Aras' research is to better understand the molecular and genetic mechanisms of heart failure and cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart muscle becomes enlarged and weak.
Aras earned his medical degree as well as a doctoral degree in neurobiology from the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He then completed a residency in internal medicine at the Duke University Medical Center, followed by fellowships at UCSF in cardiovascular medicine and in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology.
