Maja Bucan, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Genetics at the University of Pennsylvania and an Interim Director of the Penn Center for Bioinformatics. Dr. Bucan's research interests are in the area of functional genomics (or how to identify, on a large-scale, the function of genes identified by the genome project).

Her research interests also include the identification of genes that underlie behavioral traits in the mouse. Behavioral traits studied in mice are carefully chosen to correspond to the endophenotypes (measurable components) of human psychiatric disorders.

Dr. Bucan is on the editorial board of Genome Research, Mammalian Genome, Genesis, Biological Psychiatry and Genes, Brain and Behavior. In addition to her role as the new AGRE Steering Committee Chair, which she assumed in November 2004, she serves on Scientific Advisory Boards of the Tourette Syndrome Association and the NIMH Schizophrenia Program.
