Associate Professor Mahesh Choolani currently heads the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (O&G) at the National University of Singapore. He is a Senior Consultant in Maternal Fetal Medicine, and Chief of the Department of O&G at the National University Hospital. He was also appointed as Group Chief of O&G under the National University Health Systems, and Co-Director of the National University Centre for Women and Children (NUWoC).
His research focuses on the advancement of a non-invasive approach in the isolation of cell-based fetal DNA from maternal blood for prenatal diagnosis. Additionally, he has introduced the non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPS) test, which utilizes cell-free fetal DNA obtained from maternal plasma to pregnant women in Singapore and around the region.
With a strong background in Obstetrics, A/Prof Choolani has a deep interest in the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into Obstetric care, recognizing the potential of AI to enhance patient outcomes and advance medical research.
A/Prof Choolani’s expertise is recognized by his leadership roles such as the President of the College of Clinician Scientists, Singapore, President of the International Society of Prenatal Diagnosis and the President-at-Large of the International Fetal Medicine and Surgery Society.
