Professor Maciej Małecki graduated from the Faculty of Medicine of the Mikołaj Kopernik Medical University in Krakow in 1988. He is a specialist in the field of internal medicine, diabetology, laboratory diagnostics, and endocrinology. In 1998, he successfully defended, with distinction, his doctoral dissertation "The search for genes that predispose to type 2 diabetes within the chromosome 20q" in Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University. The dissertation was honored with the Aurelia Baczko Award awarded by the Polish Foundation for Science Advancement of the Society for the Promotion and Propagation of Sciences for the best doctoral dissertation in the field of nonsurgical clinical medicine. In 2004, he was awarded a post-doctoral degree after presenting his post-doctoral dissertation "Molecular basis of type 2 diabetes – selected pathogenic and clinical issues". In 2009, he received the academic title of professor.

His work focuses on the genetic background of monogenic diabetes and types 2 diabetes and diabetes complications, as well as clinical studies in diabetes, in particular relating to pregnancy. He authored and co-authored about 180 scientific articles, including about 120 original ones; his works have been cited until 2014 over 330 times (IF about 550, Hirsch index 23). He is a member of the Executive Board of the Polish Diabetes Association (since 2007), Vice-President of the Association since 2011, President-elect of the Polish Diabetes Association. He was a member of the board of the European Society of Clinical Investigation. A member of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, EASD expert for etiological diabetes.

He is a reviewer of Endocrine Review, Diabetes, Diabetes Care, Diabetologia (Diabetology), Diabetic Medicine, and numerous national journals as well as an editor of the European Journal of Clinical Investigation and Diabetologia Praktyczna (Practical Diabetology). He is an EU expert for the evaluation of scientific projects under the FP6 and the FP7 Ideas framework program. He published papers in the leading world scientific journals, among others in Nature Genetics, Nature Clinical Practice Neurology, New England Journal of Medicine, Diabetes, Diabetologia (Diabetology), Diabetes Care, Stroke, Neurology, etc. In 2008–2012, he was the Vice-dean of the Medical Faculty of the Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University for the organization of studies and curriculum, currently a representative of the Rector of the Jagiellonian University for research and development in the Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University.
