Padma Bhushan Dr. M. Khalilullah is an eminent cardiologist and a pioneer in the field of electrophysiology in the country. Born in pre-independent India, he completed his MBBS in 1960, and MD (Medicine) in 1965. He joined the Department of Cardiology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences in 1966 for DM (Cardiology). After completing his DM (Cardiology) in 1969 from AIIMS, he had a distinguished career at G.B. Pant Hospital in New Delhi, where he was the Director, Professor, and Head of Cardiology of G.B. Pant Hospital. During his DM (Cardiology) training, he developed India’s first indigenous pacemaker for which he received an award from the President of India. During his career of 25 years at G.B. Pant Hospital, he made several landmark contributions, and innovations and developed the field of Cardiac Electrophysiology and interventional cardiology changing the entire practice of cardiology in the country.

He established a comprehensive and advanced training program for DM Cardiology, producing some of the most eminent academic and practicing Cardiologists in the country. He was President of the Cardiological Society of India and Honorary Editor of the Indian Heart Journal. He was Honorary Physician to the President of India, recipient of the Dr. B. C. Roy National Award in 1984, Padma Shri in 1984, and one of the very few alumni of a GMCN Nagpur University and to be conferred the D.Sc (Medicine) Honoris Causa at the Nagpur University’s platinum jubilee function in 1987. He received Padma Bhushan in 1990 and is the lifetime achievement Awardee of many academic and professional institutions. Having contributed about 400 landmark scientific papers in leading National and International Journals, he authored the first textbook on Cardiology in India. He is a visiting Professor to National and International Institutions, he organized many historic National and International conferences. After 25 years of a distinguished career, he retired and established a comprehensive Cardiac Institution named “The Heart Centre”. He is still an active practicing clinical, invasive, and interventional cardiologist at The Heart Centre, New Delhi.
