Lutz Jermutus is Vice-President of Research & Development, at AstraZeneca in Cambridge. He is interested in applying protein design and directed evolution of peptides, proteins, and antibodies to probe human pharmacology and to create new medicines. During my Ph.D., he worked on methods to evolve protein variants with novel functionalities in the test tube. He then started his career in biotech before moving into R&D leadership and from there clinical development. At AstraZeneca, he first headed up the Global Technology Department. He then had the opportunity to take one of the resulting drug leads, a dual agonist peptide, into clinical trials and help transform it into new medicine.
