Dr. Luis Carvajal is a human geneticist who has been involved in the discovery of several low- and highly-penetrant genes that increase the risk of colorectal cancer. Dr. Carvajal leads or co-leads large studies of cancer epidemiology and genetics in Latin America, including CHIBCHA, a colorectal cancer case-control study in the Colombian and Mexican populations and COLUMBUS, an admixture mapping study of breast cancer genes in Hispanic women. Dr. Carvajal has been also involved in the characterization of Hispanic genetic demography and the genetic origins of these populations. He recently moved to the University of California Davis where is establishing a research group that investigates the genetics of cancer susceptibility in populations of Hispanic and European descent.
