Louise M. Goff PhD

Dr Louise Goff is a Reader in Nutritional Sciences at King’s. Currently, she is funded by an NIHR Advanced Fellowship to lead a programme of research focused on ethnic inequalities in type 2 diabetes in populations of African ancestry. Alongside this, Louise is a member of the teaching staff in the Department of Nutrition & Dietetics. Louise's research career over the last 20 years has focused on improving our understanding of the causes of metabolic diseases, like type 2 diabetes and heart disease, and the effects of diet and lifestyle on these conditions. Louise currently leads an interdisciplinary research team and a programme of research focused on improving health for UK African & Caribbean communities. Her research expertise spans physiology, epidemiology, lifestyle and health services research, complex interventions, and qualitative methods. She has worked extensively with UK African and Caribbean communities covering a broad range of research from understanding differences in the biological mechanisms by which diabetes develops in African and Caribbean groups to improving the cultural competency of healthcare professionals. She is currently Chief Investigator for two large projects. The first is a project funded by the National Institute of Health Research in which she is leading the development and evaluation of a culturally-tailored diabetes self-management programme for African and Caribbean patients. The second is a Diabetes UK-funded project investigating ethnic distinctions in the mechanisms by which diabetes develops in Black British communities. Louise is co-editor of the ‘Advanced Nutrition and Dietetics in Diabetes textbook and currently sits on the Diabetes UK Nutrition Committee, leading the development of evidence-based guidelines for the nutritional management of diabetes in ethnic minority groups.
