Lorenzo Menicanti is Director of the Heart – Adult Surgery Area at the IRCCS Policlinico San Donato in Milan, which includes Adult Cardiac Surgery, University Cardiac Surgery and Translational Research, Cardiac Surgery, and Adult Congenital Cardiology units. At the San Donato Polyclinic, he also holds the prestigious position of Scientific Director.
He graduated in Medicine and Surgery at the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Rome (1975) cum laude and there he obtained a specialization in Urology in 1979. He specialized in Pediatric Surgery in 1984 in Verona and in 1989 in Cardiac Surgery in Padua. In 1990 he obtained the master's qualification as Chief of Pediatric Surgery and Chief of Cardiac Surgery.
He was Assistant Cheif de Clinique at the University of Marseilles in 1980 and at the University of Nice in 1982, completing surgical training in prestigious American and English universities and hospitals.
He has worked at the IRCCS Policlinico San Donato since 1988 and in 1990 he was appointed Head of the Cardiac Surgery Division. During his career he has personally performed over 16,000 major heart operations, both for congenital pathologies and for acquired pathologies, contributing to making the San Donato Polyclinic a reference center at national and international level with more than 55,000 patients treated surgically.
Since 1987 he has been a Consultant at the Cardiothoracic Center of Monaco (Principality of Monaco) and has been Visiting Professor at many universities, including the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York (2019), the University of Beijing in China (2009) and the University of Tokyo in Japan (2002).
He is past President of the Italian Society of Cardiac Surgery (SICCH), was CoChairman of the Surgical Committee of the STITCH Clinical Study for the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda (United States), as well as a member of the American Association Thoracic Surgery (AATS), of the Hospital Cardiologists, European Society of Cardio-Vascular Surgery, Belgian Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Florida Society of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgeons. In November 2020 he assumed the position of President of the Cardiological Network, the largest Italian research network in the cardiovascular field.
He has over 230 publications in the most important Italian and foreign scientific journals.
