Dr. Liu is the Deputy Director and Professor of the Department of Epidemiology at Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University; Beijing Institute of Heart, Lung, and Blood Vessel Diseases, Beijing, China. Dr. Liu received her medical degree from the School of Medicine, Peking University (the former Beijing Medical University), and her Ph.D. from the Capital Medical University. She did her training for biochemistry at the Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore, India) and received the training for the cardiometabolic disease at the Center for Human Nutrition, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (TX, USA).

Dr. Liu's research interests include the surveillance and etiological studies of atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVD). She is a key investigator of the WHO-Sino-MONICA project (Multinational Monitoring of Trends and Determinants in Cardiovascular Disease) and leads the set up of the Beijing Surveillance System for Cardiovascular Diseases using routinely collected administrative healthcare data. Dr. Liu has also worked for the Chinese Multi-provincial Cohort Study (CMCS) for more than 20 years. In this long-term prospective study, over 30,000 Chinese adults from 11 provinces have been followed up for the incidence of ASCVD and all-cause mortality since 1992. Moreover, examinations for cardiometabolic risk factors and carotid atherosclerosis have been repeated regularly among the participants in Beijing (CMCS-Beijing Project). Presently, her research is focused on the role of lipid metabolism in the development and progression of subclinical atherosclerosis. Through these studies, her team identified the characteristics and major risk factors for ASCVD in the Chinese population. Dr. Liu has published more than 130 papers in peer-review journals, such as JAMA, Nat. Rev. Cardiol., Circulation, et al, and has been a panel member for the development of preventive guidelines for ASCVD in China.
